Summary:During pregnancy, amazing changes go on inside a woman’s body as life begins to grow. For any human being, the most rapid growth and development their body experiences is in their mother’s womb. Here’s a brief overview of pregnancy week by week.

First Trimester – Week 1 through 12:
According to this method, the beginning of pregnancy is measured beginning on the first day of your menstrual cycle, thus before conception. It may seem strange that stages of pregnancy start before there’s a baby growing, but think of it as the oven preheating before putting the bun in to bake. If a woman wants to become pregnant, now is the time to start healthy habits that will help her baby throughout the rest of the pregnancy. Eat right, exercise and rest well. Drink plenty of water and stop any bad habits like smoking and drinking.

At week 2 your menstrual cycle is finished, the lining of your uterus is growing into a bed of tissue rich in blood vessel that will attach onto your baby from the time he’s a fertilized egg to the day he comes out. Your ovaries are preparing for ovulation, where one of your eggs will be releases into the uterus to await fertilization by the sperm. If twins run in your family, you may release two eggs. Ovulation is a primary time to attempt conception, so grab your husband and enjoy. After conception occurs in the fallopian tube, the newly formed zygote with quickly divide and grow into a multiple cell formation called a blastocyst. The blastocyst will implant during week 4. Don’t worry, this can cause some implantation bleeding, which is light and not harmful at all. Some early symptoms of pregnancy such as breast tenderness, fatigue and mood swings may occur, which can be confused with your regular menstrual cycle. However, super sensitive smell may also happen. During week 5 and 6 the baby rapidly develops. The circulatory system actually is the first system to start functioning! However, the heart beat won’t be heard for a while. A neural tube develops which will be the nervous system and a simple tube is the precursor to the digestive system. For the poor mother, morning sickness can attack any time day or night. Some foods you may crave and others may make you hug the toilet. Arm and leg buds also develop. By week 7 the baby is about the size of a grain of rice, yet the brain is rapidly growing as are all other organ systems. First trimester symptoms are still in full swing for mom. Week 8 shows more development of the arms and legs and an ultrasound would show a tiny heart beat. This is also when tooth buds develop. By the end of the first trimester at week 12, all the organ systems are developed as well as the arms, legs, toes and fingers. For some moms, morning sickness will ease up at this time. This is the dawn of the 2nd trimester, the most enjoyable of the pregnancy trimesters, so enjoy it.
2nd Trimester – Week 13 through week 27: From week 13 to week 16 the baby begins to move those arms and legs. You may not feel it if you have a thick uterus or if this is your first pregnancy so don’t worry. Fingernails and toenails are growing, too! For mom, the body’s blood volume has increased by 40% to 50%, which can cause stuffy noses, nosebleeds and other symptoms like headaches. Be sure to discuss everything with your doctor or midwife, though. Your ligaments will also stretch more and you may experience some achiness in your joints. From week 17 to 20, your baby’s skeleton begins to harden into bone. On average, the fetus is about 5 inches long and weighs 5 ounces.

From week 21 to 24 eyebrows and eyelids come into place. If you were to stretch out his little legs, your baby would be about 10 inches long. At the end of the 2nd trimester, your little guy starts to put on baby fat as his wrinkly skin smoothes out.
3rd Trimester – Week 28 to 40: By the 3rd trimester, some amazing transformations have taken place. Your baby will weigh about 3 pounds and is more than 15 inches long! Also, he can open and close his eyes and follow a light. By eight months, your baby is gaining more fat and his lungs are well developed. He will weigh about 4 ¾ pounds by the end of week 37. During the last 4 weeks, babies end up varying a great deal in size, just as adult people do. The average size of a baby about to be born is more than 19 inches long and nearly 7 pounds. The head usually will be pointing down, and if the baby is breech (feet down) or transverse (laying across) in the uterus, your doctor may consider a c-section.

Hopefully this week by week pregnancy guide, even though it's not an exact pregnancy calender, will help explain a little bit about what's going on inside your body. However, all pregnancy information should be checked with your doctor or midwife.
