To talk about American baby names may seem strange, especially since many names we Americans give our children have their roots in Europe or other areas of the world. That’s what happens when your nation is a big melting pot of cultures. However, through the 234 years that this country has existed, there are several baby names that have arisen as distinctly American. Like anything else from the United States, baby names follow trends that change for each generation. Just take a look at American baby names from the 1950’s and you will see many monikers that are today considered weird and rare.

One assumption that you don’t want to make is that choosing an all-American name for your infant will mean selecting a boring name. Boring does not have to be synonymous with the term all-American. There are several things American parents can do to give their child a unique name. One suggestion is to dig through the family history to find a unique middle name. Your son’s first name may be John, but his middle name could be Brooks. What we in the U.S. have to realize is that we do have our own culture, not just borrowed versions of other people’s cultures, and it’s great to pick an American baby name for your child.
