Shopping List for Newborn

Summary:If you’re expecting a new bundle of joy to your family soon, congratulations! Now, if you’re a first time mom, you may be wondering what in the world you should buy to prepare for the little one to come home. There are a few things that are absolutely necessary and there are the items that are nice to have on hand. The prices can add up, so it’s a good idea to register for these as your baby shower gifts.

Some must have items are a car seat, stroller that can push around the car seat and, of course, clothing and diapers for the baby. Depending on your work situation, you may have to get a breast pump if you’re breastfeeding. Full-time working moms should invest in the high-quality electronic pump. They’re pricey, but you get what you pay for. Car seats are a requirement by law, and no hospital will let you take your little bambino home without one. Make sure you know how to properly install the base into the car before hand so that you’re not trying to figure it out on the day baby comes home. A stroller that can hold the car seat, like a Graco brand, is a great help in transporting a baby, especially when they’re asleep.

Infants don’t like to be moved around from seat to seat, so having a stroller like this will help immensely. Next is, of course, the clothing. You don’t want your baby to go around naked, at least not all the time. Don’t make the mistake of buying only newborn and 0-3 month size clothing. Your baby boy or girl will soon grow and you’ll need plenty of clothing for each size bracket. Again, the best time to get this mountain of apparel is from family and friends at the baby shower, so be sure to register for the different sizes. Last but not least are the ever needed diapers. If you’re going all disposable, stock up with enough newborn size diapers to cover the first few weeks. This will give you one less thing to worry about during those first sleep deprived days. Every baby is different, but if you buy a few of large boxes of diapers from the store, you should be fine. If you’re using cloth diapers, it helps to buy a beginners kit.

This includes the cloth diapers, snappies to hold them and outer shells. You can also get liners to absorb extra urine. Just as a side note, cloth diapers do save a lot of money in the long run, and they help the environment!
Aside from these few must haves, there are some things that are luxury items on a new parent’s list. One nice thing is a swing or bouncy seat. However, it should be noted that some kids just don’t like certain brands or types. A baby that loves a swing may not be too crazy about a bouncy seat and vice versa. Don’t spend too much money if you’re buying it before hand, or let someone else get it for you. The only time to invest your own money is if you’re buying after your baby is born and you know it’s something your baby will want (i.e. you know your baby likes bouncing).

A baby crib is nice, but not necessary right away if you plan on co-sleeping. Many experts, like the renowned Dr. Sears, say that one of the best ways to prevent SIDS is to have the baby co-sleep with mom. Another helpful tool is a sound machine. Sometimes called white noise machines, they simply make calming background noise like ocean waves to help sooth a fussy baby. It can be a big help in drowning out other noises to keep a child sleeping. Then, of course, there is the old favorite, the diaper bag. You don’t have to have a diaper bag to carry diapers and accessories. Any large bag or backpack will do, but many diaper bags are just too cute to resist. Don’t worry too much about toys until the baby is older, but it’s not a bad idea to get a few good ones, because it won’t be long before your infant is looking for something to do.
