Benefits of Baby
Massage
by: Grant Carroll
Touch is one of the oldest and best ways
for human beings to connect with one another. When you have
a baby, it’s the perfect opportunity to experience a
connection through gentle, loving touch.
|
| A great way
to experience this is through the art of baby massage.
The benefits of baby massage are physical, mental
and help the parents as much as the baby.
The physical and mental benefits for your baby are numerous
and encompass all aspects of their well being. For starters,
massaging your infant causes the release of growth-promoting
hormones and the enzymes that make cells more responsive to
these hormones. Research has demonstrated that infants who
are held more grow better that those that are not. This is
even true for animals in the wild. It is also believed that
baby massage promotes the growth of myelin, the material that
insulates neurons in the brain. This makes nerve impulses
travel faster which leads to better neurological development.
Another part of baby’s body that will benefit is the
digestive system. Infants that are touched more like through
baby massage showed an enhanced secretion of digestive hormones.
This is good news for colicky babies and the tired parents
that tend to them. The mental benefits include improved behavior
and self-esteem for your little one. Massaged babies fuss
less and are better organized. They also interact better with
others and settle down easier at night. Their self-esteem
improves through the love they feel while being massaged.
It gives them a feeling of value, just as it does for adults.
Baby massage has many benefits for adults as well.
Mainly, it provides an opportunity for the parent to connect
with baby and to learn about their needs and cues. It’s
great for working moms and dad’s who are rookies at
fathering. It’s also a great way to reconnect to the
baby after being gone all day. For both mothers and fathers,
baby massage is an important tool to learn in caring
for their infant.
