Summary:If someone very close to you has just had a baby, you’re probably trying hard to think of ways to help and give gifts to the new mom. Whether or not she’s already had a baby shower, there is a present that will always be needed and appreciated by the parents… baby clothes. |

Mom and dad are obviously going to buy a lot of clothing on their own, but every piece that they receive as a present will be well used by little one. This is especially true if the parents have a premature infant. Premature baby clothes are an essential part of keeping a tiny one warm, so they make great presents. Finding the perfect gift for a newborn starts with knowing what the baby’s needs are
Many family members and friends buy a cute toy or accessory for the new arrival, and that’s fine, but the little tot won’t be able to use or enjoy it until he or she is much older. If you want to get something that the child really needs and that the mother will appreciate, then you really should consider baby clothing. Some may find this a boring present, like giving someone socks for their birthday. The fact is, however, that clothes for an infant have to be bought in large amounts of multiple sizes to accommodate rapid growth. It’s great that when you’re getting apparel for a newborn, there’s really no such thing as getting the wrong size. Sure, it may be too big now, but without a doubt the little one will grow into it. This is truest for a preemie. They’ve no way to go but up. This kind of offering to the new family will be a big help and will show how much you care. |

Guidelines for Preemie Apparel |
©Little Pampered Babies 2007 |
All babies are different. This may seem painfully obvious, but it’s worth pointing it out to illustrate sizing choices for clothes. On most apparel, the tags have some sort of indication of what size child it will fit. However, any experienced parent will tell you that those sizes are more of a rough guideline. For example, there are many tiny tots that are still wearing size “0-3 months” well into their fifth month. At the same time there are kids who are ready to go up a size from newborn in their second month. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong at all because it’s well known that children grow at their own pace. Knowing when to give them bigger infant clothing is all about observation.
A good rule of thumb in giving your babe the right size is the tightness of the apparel. |
It doesn’t matter so much if it’s a little short on their arms or legs, but if it’s uncomfortable, it has to go. Make sure your little one can move freely and that no flesh is bulging out under the clothes line. If it’s a onesie, it should snap easily without a big struggle. Also, observe how easily it goes over your infant’s head. If it’s too small this will be very uncomfortable for your tot.
